Optimum Nutrition and

Natural Healing

“It is far more important to know what person the disease has than what disease the person has” Hippocrates

Irish%20stewNatural healing is based on the belief that the body knows how to heal itself and stay healthy, as long as we provide the right conditions for health. Disease (literally dis-ease) is caused when we upset our body’s natural balance.

Hippocrates (460 - 370 BC), the father of medicine and the Founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine, said, “Disease does not occur unexpectedly, it is the result of constant violation of Nature's laws.”

Modern living puts us out of touch with the natural laws of health and healing. There is little attempt in our society to understand how disease occurs. We are not taught the true causes of disease, how our bodies work or the effects of food, lifestyle, environmental factors and emotions on the creation of disease.

Doctors only receive a few hours of training in nutrition so it is hardly surprising that most do not take the optimum nutrition and natural healing approach more seriously.

We are accustomed to modern medicine with its emphasis on technology, drugs and surgery, yet according to the Dr. Rath Foundation, "Modern medicine only came into being at the beginning of the 20th century when the Rockefeller Foundation set up a new global venture: the 'pharmaceutical investment business.' Donation from the Rockefeller Foundation went only to medical schools and hospitals that had become missionaries of treatments developed by a new breed of companies: manufacturers of patented, synthetic drugs."

Most of these treatments carry mild to serious side effects which in turn cause other health problems that are then treated with another wave of the same suppressive chemicals, radiation or surgery. The Journal of the American Medical Association says: "The known deadly side effects of prescription drugs are the fourth leading cause of death in the industrialised world, surpassed only by the number of deaths from heart attacks, cancer and strokes."

Dr. Rath again: "The pharmaceutical industry is not a 'health industry' but an 'investment business' that thrives on the continuation and expansion of disease. This epidemic of unnecessary disability and death by the pharmaceutical business with disease is unparalleled in history."

He goes on to tell us that, "The beginning of the 20th century was also the time when the first vitamins were discovered. It soon became clear that these natural molecules had life saving health benefits and were able to prevent many chronic health conditions. The first books appeared with research about the health benefits of vitamins. These newly discovered molecules had only one disadvantage: they were non-patentable. In its first years of existence, the pharmaceutical investment business faced a threat from vitamins and other micronutrients as they would prohibit the development of any sizable investment business based on patented drugs."

Maintaining rather than curing disease is a multi-billion dollar global business. The pharmaceutical industry makes more than $500 billion in profits each year as long as disease exists.

While we can use the best of modern medicine: more accurate diagnosis and a judicious use of drugs and surgery to save lives, the mainstream medical model does not 'cure' anything, nor is it designed to build health.

Mainstream medicine has a very hard time with so-called chronic, 'progressive' and 'incurable' diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, dementia, and a whole raft of auto-immune and inflammatory diseases that now afflict us. This is because they have gone down a blind alley by ignoring time tested and proven methods of natural health, and the decades of research into nutrition and micronutrients (most of which has been reported in their very own medical journals).

Alternative medicine

It may be why many doctors are now looking towards alternative methods of helping their patients and why people are turning to alternative therapies to get well. In fact there is a branch of medicine called 'Functional (nutritional) Medicine' being practised by doctors across the world who have become disenchanted with the results of allopathic, conventional medicine.

Surveys estimate that on average at least a third of people across Europe use alternative therapies to stay well and treat disease because they are viewed as safer and more gentle than many conventional medical treatments.

Modern medicine compartmentalises the body, treating a disease out of context of the whole body and the person with the disease. The body is an extrordinarily complex organism. Zillions of biochemical processes take place every second of life, with all parts of the body interconnected so that what affects, say the stomach, can affect the immune, endocrine and nervous systems, bones, skin or the brain.

Natural healing methods are holistic in that they address the whole person, not the disease. They treat the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of an individual.

Optimum nutrition and Functional medicine are based on the western system of naturopathy, which in itself is a traditional natural method of healing.

Ill health and disease have at their root cause a genetic blueprint that may pre-dispose someone to certain health conditions and biochemical imbalances caused by:

  • Stress, the number one cause of health problems, especially chronic, unresolved emotional and mental stress
  • Dietary choices that don't align with the body's genetic metabolic type
  • Autotoxicity which is a toxic state of the body due to many factors
  • Heavy metals and environmental toxins
  • Allergies and food intolerances
  • Loss of gastro-intestinal integrity leading to 'leaky gut' (an over-permeable gut membrane) and infection by yeasts, fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites
  • Deficiencies in protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids

Nutrition forms the basis of all natural and traditional healing systems around the world. Hippocrates said: "Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food."

Through gentle detoxification, discovering the right way of eating for each individual, and appropriate supplementation, including the use of herbs and plants, optimum nutrition provides the biochemical building blocks to create health.

The aim is to rebalance the body to create excellent health, high energy and an increased resistance to stress and disease. Through Optimum Nutrition you can increase your resistance to ill health and disease by learning how to interpret your symptoms and what to do about them.

Because the mind/body connection is paramount to health, the Optimum Nutrition approach is much more than just about eating the right foods. Taking responsibility for your own health sends a profound message to the subconscious that you believe you are important enough to nurture yourself. Whatever your mind believes, your body will fulfil, given the right biochemical conditions. A healthy mind and a healthy body are so interlinked that each influences the other.

cavemanDiscover your metabolic type

We are all genetic individuals with our own metabolic needs. This which means that there is no one diet fits all, despite the plethora of nutritional books telling you how to eat according to one person’s ideal.

Metabolism is the sum total of all the chemical processes that take place in every cell in the body necessary for the maintenance of life. It also describes the process whereby food is converted into fuel for energy.

Your metabolic type reflects your particular metabolism, which is dependent on many factors, including genetic inheritance, exposure to pollution and other contaminants, diet and general lifestyle, and emotional make up (i.e. the way you handle stress) and the way you view life.

In evolutionary terms, an estimated 75% of us are stone-agers. That means that we do best on a diet similar to the one consumed by our hunter gatherer ancestors, i.e. meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. Until mankind settled down and started farming, we consumed very few grains and no dairy products.

The other 25% of the population who are not genetically programmed to be stone-agers seem to do very well and even thrive on a diet that is high in whole grains and dairy products. They seem to need very little in the way of meat or fish, if any at all. These people are natural vegetarians.

When you discover your natural way of eating, this can provide a good starting point for healing.
